Overview of Maximum Allowable Operating Pressure (MAOP)

Maximum Allowable Operating Pressure (MAOP), or maximum allowable working pressure, refers to the highest amount of pressure under which a piece of equipment can safely be operated.[1]  It is important that operators responsible for pipelines and other pressure vessels are always aware of and closely monitor equipment pressures in order to ensure it does not exceed MAOP, which could lead to rupture or catastrophic failure. The exact MAOP of a particular piece of equipment depends on a multitude of factors, including the equipment’s design, diameter, wall thickness, and material composition.[2]
