National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors

Explore this topic

Created in 1919, The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors is an organization that develops standards, training programs, and certifications to promote greater safety to life and property through uniformity in the construction, installation, repair, maintenance, and inspection of pressure equipment. Most notably, the National Board is responsible for the National Board Inspection Code (NBIC), an internationally recognized standard providing rules for the installation, inspection, and repair and/or alteration of boilers, pressure vessels, and pressure relief devices.

The NBIC is organized into four Parts to coincide with specific post-construction activities involving pressure-retaining items:

    • Part 1, Installation – provides requirements and guidance to ensure all types of pressure-retaining items are installed and function properly.
    • Part 2, Inspection – provides information and guidance needed to perform and document inspections for all types of pressure-retaining items.
    • Part 3, Repairs and Alterations – provides information and guidance to perform, verify, and document acceptable repairs or alterations to pressure-retaining items regardless of code of construction.
    • Part 4, Pressure Relief Devices – provides information and guidance to perform, verify, and document the installation, inspection, and repair of Pressure Relief Devices.

The National Board membership oversees adherence to rules and regulations relating to boilers and pressure vessels. The National Board Members are the chief boiler inspectors representing most states and all provinces of North America, as well as many major cities in the United States.
