API RP 580 - Risk Based Inspection (RBI)

Explore this topic

API RP 580, Risk-Based Inspection, is a recommended practice developed and published by the American Petroleum Institute (API) that outlines and explains the basic elements for developing, implementing and maintaining a credible risk-based inspection (RBI) program. It is a generic document on RBI that can be used as a measuring stick by which the quality of any and all RBI methods and work processes could be evaluated to determine if they meet the level of quality prescribed in the RP. API RP 580 was originally published in 2002, and the most recent 3rd Edition was released in February of 2016.

API RP 580 is now an ANSI/API Standard, which was balloted and approved using the ANSI consensus process for creating American National Standards. As such, it becomes a "recognized and generally accepted good engineering practice (RAGAGEP)", for use by all companies in the oil and chemical industry.

API RP 580 is supplemented by the latest edition of API RP 581, Risk-Based Inspection Technology.
