2015 Seattle API Spring Refining and Standards Meeting

The 2015 API Spring Refining and Equipment Standards Meeting will be held at the Seattle Sheraton during the week of April 13-16, with plenty of interesting meetings for Inspectioneers.  You do not need to be a member of API or even the Subcommittee on Inspection to come join in the discussions, and find out to the latest news on all the Inspection and Materials/Corrosion Standards.  This is your opportunity to make your views known relative to updating the contents of numerous API Standards. Here are some of the meeting highlights for Inspectioneers:

  • Ballot resolution discussions for the 4th editions of the API Piping Code and RP (API 570 and 574) will occur with an abundance of significant issues under consideration for revisions and new inclusions.
  • Numerous potential changes to API RP 576 will be discussed in that task group for possible revisions to the API standard on Inspection of Pressure Relieving Devices.
  • The Task Group on API RP 580 on Risk Based Inspection will meet to consider numerous changes, especially with regard to changing several suggested RBI practices to mandatory RBI requirements.
  • The task group on PMI (API RP 578) will discuss changes desired for material identification and verification, needed for the 3rd edition.
  • The task group on API RP 572 will discuss numerous improvements to that document, including shifting information back and forth between API 510 and 572 and inclusion of newer recommended practices for vessel inspection.
  • The new task group on Corrosion Control Documents (CCDs) is planning to meet to finalize a suggested outline for assembling a comprehensive CCD for process units. The plan is to outline all the topics that should be covered in a CCD in order to document everything inspectors and supporting engineers need to know about damage mechanisms in each specific process unit.
  • The new task group on NDE Methods and Applications (API RP 586) will meet to discuss the framework and proposed content for a brand new standard on the subject. The primary objective of this new standard will be to provide guidance on the selection of NDE techniques based on equipment type and degradation mechanisms. This meeting is in addition to the normal NDE T/G meeting held each time to focus on the development of newer NDE techniques and methods.
  • After another very successful API Inspection Summit in Galveston in January, the Summit Planning task group will meet to begin formulating plans for the next Summit in January 2017.
  • And of course, the normal committee meetings for the Inspection Subcommittee (SCI) and Corrosion/Materials Subcommittee (SCCM) will be held to update everyone interested in hearing about their current and forthcoming activities.
