Introduction

It continues to amaze me as I go from site to site participating in the API Process Safety Site Assessments (PSSA) how little the folks in operations, maintenance, process safety and engineering know about what we do for the site? Sometimes even our own management does not know everything we’re involved in. Why is that? I believe it’s because we, those of us in the Fixed Equipment Mechanical Integrity (FEMI) discipline, by-and-large are not good communicators about everything in our bailiwick and the importance of it all to the success of the operating site.  Keep in mind that when I write about FEMI, I’m writing about it in the broad sense of FEMI which includes inspectors, inspection specialists, corrosion/materials engineers, FEMI support engineers, and direct line FEMI supervisors, all of which I have always believed should be in the same department to maximize effectiveness, efficiency and integration of the group.

Purpose of This Article

The purpose of this article is to convince you to become a better communicator to our “customers” within our operating sites in order to help them know and understand what our FEMI charter is all about.  That includes establishing and communicating our FEMI Mission, Vision, Core Values and Responsibilities to all stakeholders at the site.
