The recently released API RP-579 Fitness-for-Service Recommended Practice highlights the need for a measurable degree of reliability in NDE results. In fact, the industry has been asking for a process to assure a minimum level of inspection quality for some time.
The American Petroleum Institute is launching a qualification program with the initial round of trial testing slated for January 2001. The initial focus is manual UT flaw detection. The pilot program objectives are to demonstrate the feasibility of a performance demonstration program in the oil and petrochemical industry, establish the foundation of a permanent, long-term qualification program and to develop the best program structure for the permanent, long-term program.
