A Primer on Acoustic Emission Testing

Sponsored by

Overview

Acoustic emission (AE) testing is a nondestructive examination (NDE) technique used to detect structural changes in materials by measuring sound waves produced during stress or deformation. Common damage mechanisms include hydrogen embrittlement, fatigue, stress corrosion cracking, and creep deformation. AE allows real-time monitoring of crack growth, enabling remote evaluation and timely attention to components needing immediate repair.

This Asset Intelligence Report serves as an informative primer to provide an understanding of AE. This primer contains the following sections:

  • Overview
  • History and Development
  • Techniques and Methodology
  • Industry Applications
  • Advantages and Disadvantages
  • References
  • Further Reading

As with other Asset Intelligence Reports, this document is not intended to serve as a comprehensive guide, but rather an introductory primer on AE. Since the information is provided in a condensed format, we recommend printing and laminating copies that can be referenced by you and your co-workers at your convenience.
