Cascade Natural Gas Corp. facing $4 million fine after pipeline safety investigation reveals recordkeeping violations

The Washington State Utilities and Transportation Commission released an investigation report this week claiming that Cascade Natural Gas Corporation "has demonstrated a lax attitude toward compliance that exposes the public to an unacceptable level of risk" and has recommended that the commission impose the maximum penalty of $4 million. Cascade Natural Gas, a subsidiary of MDU Resources Group, operates hundreds of miles of natural gas pipelines throughout Washington and Oregon. The commission alleges that the company failed to maintain records and documentation of the maximum allowable operating pressure for at least 116 pipeline segments. Federal standards establish the highest pressure at which each segment of pipeline can safely operate and companies are now required to maintain records to prove compliance.
