Sonomatic broadens NDT reach with new offshore inspection division

Press Release, August 13, 2013

Ultrasonic inspection specialist Sonomatic has established a new division to meet growing demand for its range of offshore services.

The Rope Access and Inspection Division is led by Bill Brown, who has more than 40 years' experience in non-destructive testing (NDT) processes and has held a range of senior management positions within the offshore contracting sector.

Sonomatic — which has UK bases in Aberdeen and Warrington — is a market leader in the application of NDT and non-intrusive inspection (NII) across the oil and gas industry worldwide.

Sonomatic Integrity Services Manager Dr Mark Stone said: "The new division means we can broaden our reach, offering both existing and prospective clients a wider, cost-effective one-stop service.

"It's a natural extension to our existing capabilities and means we can now include topside and splash zone components while also taking our established engineering-based approach into the NDT contracting environment.

"Bill Brown has unrivalled experience in the NDT sector and his appointment further underlines Sonomatic's commitment to delivering the best possible service to our oil and gas clients."

Mr Brown began his NDT career as a technician with Babcock & Wilcox in Renfrew in 1969, moving to Aberdeen in 1981 with the goal of introducing and developing the application of eddy-currents to coated steel structures.

Over the next 25-plus years, he held numerous senior roles — among them training facilities manager for TWI in Aberdeen — and has always been actively involved in the British Institute of NDT which recognised his outstanding contribution to the industry by awarding the Nemet Award in 2011.

He was awarded a first-class honours degree in NDT by the University of Northampton in 2012 and has recently gained Chartered Engineer status.

Mr Brown said: "Sonomatic is recognised globally as a pioneer of advanced testing and inspection techniques and I am looking forward to exploring and opening up new markets for the company across the offshore sector."
