Motiva Considering Multi-Billion Dollar Expansion of Port Arthur Refinery

Beaumont Enterprise, December 26, 2018

Motiva Enterprises LLC, a Houston-based subsidiary of Saudi Aramco, is considering some $6.6 billion worth of investments in its Port Arthur refinery to expand into the petrochemical business. According to documents filed with the Texas Comptroller's office, the company is evaluating a new $4.7 billion steam cracker to produce ethylene, as well as a new $1.9 billion complex that would produce benzene and paraxylene. This type of expansion project could create thousands of construction jobs for the area if approved.

Signs are pointing to the petrochemical projects landing in Port Arthur, however Angela Goodwin, a Motiva spokesperson, said the company is "actively exploring several opportunities along the Gulf Coast."

"Final investment decisions by the Board of Directors are not expected to be made until the end of 2019 and are dependent on strong economics, competitive incentives and regulatory support," Goodwin said in an email.
