API’s 1169 Certification Program, Now INGAA and CEPA-Endorsed, Sets Out to Change Pipeline Safety

American Petroleum Institute, March 15, 2016

Major U.S. and Canadian pipeline associations, the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America (INGAA) and the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association (CEPA), along with their respective foundations, have publicly endorsed API’s 1169 Pipeline Inspector Certification Program. The organizations will be working with their member companies to ensure that pipeline inspectors within their membership become API 1169-certified; it is their hope that by 2018 all inspection professionals will have the opportunity to pursue the certification.

API 1169, a relatively new addition to API’s suite of Individual Certification Programs (ICP), has the power to deeply impact new pipeline construction projects, the career paths of many inspection professionals, and pipeline safety both in North America and overseas. The certification exam is offered internationally and the program has 156 active, certified professionals in 16 countries. The program is instrumental in certifying qualified knowledgeable pipeline inspection professionals and helps new entrants establish their credentials in the inspection field.

The importance of the API 1169 certification lies in the stringent requirements for competency based on a combination of years of experience acquired within the last ten years, plus education, and in some cases, other certifications. Candidates must have a strong command of relevant codes and standards necessary to perform inspection activities during construction of new onshore pipelines.

As more energy infrastructure is planned and built, it becomes increasingly crucial for pipeline companies and professionals to incorporate safety into every stage of a line’s life,” said Gerardo Uria, API Senior Director of Business Development and Membership. “We see great promise in the API 1169 Certification and believe that it can add a new dimension to the industry’s concept of pipeline safety,” said Tina Briskin, API Senior Manager of Individual Certification Programs.

The API 1169 certification exam was first released in November 2014 and is based on API RP 1169, Recommended Practice for Basic Inspection Requirements of New Pipeline Construction, other widely recognized industry publications, and some government regulations. As of March 2016, the exam content has been updated to address specific Canadian industry governance publications.

The computer-based API 1169 certification exam is offered at 600 international locations three times per year, within multiple-day testing windows. The next exam will be held July 15-29. Qualified candidates should apply by March 20, 2016 at www.api.org/Certification-Programs/IndividualCertificationPrograms/Programs/API1169.
