John Bowker: About the Author
Materials Technology Laboratory
Dr. Bowker, as a research scientist with CANMET for 15 years, has worked on a development of high strength steels for marine and pipeline applications. He is an expert in the application of simulation techniques for the thermo-mechanical processing of steel. More recently he has become active in the application of Engineering Critical Assessment (ECA) methodologies in the petrochemical industry. He is currently co-project leader of CANMET phase II initiative on “ECA of Pressure Vessels for Sour Service.” Dr. Bowker has a B. MET. and Ph.D in Metallurgy from Sheffield University, United Kingdom.

The use of engineering critical assessment (ECA)of "fitness for service", for the evaluation of flaws and local wall thinning in pressure vessels is receiving a lot of attention in the petrochemical and utility industries. A rigorous methodology based on fracture mechanics and accurate flaw sizing can be used to assess the risk of operation of a damaged vessel by predicting the amount of damage that can lead to premature failure.
