Webinar Overview
Inspection of insulated and uninsulated process and terminal pipelines is often performed to detect corrosion under insulation (CUI) and/or corrosion under pipe supports (CUPS), typically via external methods. However, accessing the inspection area using these external methods can be difficult, often requiring scaffolding or rope access. Additionally, the areas inspected by external methods are small compared to the total pipe length. As a result, the success rate for finding actual corrosion, referred to as the probability of detection (POD), is very low—often below 50%, with typical values ranging from 15% to 25%. This inspection approach can lead to unnecessary insulation removal and reinstallation, safety risks while accessing piping, and the potential for missing areas of corrosion, which can result in unexpected failures.
Inspectioneering has teamed up with Quest Integrity for our on-demand webinar, “Detecting Corrosion Under Insulation Using In-Line Inspection.” In this webinar, we explore how modern in-line inspection (ILI) tools can inspect many of these pipelines from the inside, providing a more complete and high-quality data set faster than external inspection methods. We also discuss potential challenges when using ILI tools in pipelines not designed for pigging, as well as how differences in ILI tool design and technology can impact inspection results.
About the Speakers
Geert Bontekoe, Sr. Technology Deployment Engineer at Quest Integrity, has worked for over 20 years in the oil and gas industry. Before joining Quest Integrity in 2010, Geert worked in seismology and fiber optic network installation in Europe, and performed ILI inspections and development for A. Hak and Dacon. He also worked for TechCorr, where he developed new inspection applications and managed In-Service Robotic Tank inspections. Geert specializes in unpiggable pipeline inspections and the development of procedures for cleaning, batching, and ILI inspections, leading projects worldwide. He served as Service Line Manager InVista and PIMS for Quest Integrity from January 2019 to March 2025, when he took on his current role as Sr. Technology Deployment Engineer.
