At Norway's largest refinery, inspectors discovered the propane system's insulation had completely degraded. Mold formation was visible, an indication of persistent condensation triggered by insulation failure. The severe failure of insulation led to ice formation, which triggered a sharp rise in boil-off gas. This placed intense strain on compressors, significantly raising energy consumption and CO2 emissions. With surging gas demand and rising energy costs, the refinery faced a challenging reality: there was no feasible shutdown window to complete the necessary repairs until they discovered the Cryogel® Z as a solution. Combined with an ambient management system that controls the moisture within the work area, Cryogel® Z allowed the insulation upgrade to be performed while the propane unit was online, even during rain or snow, enabling zero disruption to the refinery's production. Cryogel® Z insulation blanket is flexible, easy to use, and safe to apply, eliminating drying and curing time that is required when using traditional materials. It does not require costly and time-consuming expansion and contraction joints, significantly reducing the work hours required for the insulation upgrade. Cryogel® Z successfully helped reduce hotspots in the system, which led to improved process stability and increased energy efficiency for the propane system. The progressive installation was executed outside of turnaround schedules, enabling the refinery to secure energy while maintaining operational safety and technical integrity.
