Detecting Corrosion in Online Insulated and Bare Piping Using Automated Radiographic Testing Technology

MISTRAS Group, November 13, 2024

Webinar Overview

Corrosion is one of the greatest issues plaguing the industry and is particularly dangerous when defects aren’t readily visible. The evolution of radiographic inspection technology has led to many innovations, especially in the field of automated radiographic testing (ART), creating a viable alternative to manual radiography techniques that enables high-quality, rapid inspections, often with no need to remove insulation or take lines out of service.

Inspectioneering teams up with MISTRAS Group for our webinar, “Detecting Corrosion in Online Insulated and Bare Piping Using Automated Radiographic Testing Technology.” During this webinar, Ian Moreau, Technology Manager at MISTRAS Group, introduces crawler-based X-ray detection systems and their recent expansion into nontraditional applications. Learn how ART has generated critical wall loss data for high-risk, difficult-to-inspect assets, including stacked lines, bundled lines, large diameter, and elevated piping. The presenter also reviews several case studies to provide insight into how these advanced X-ray crawlers are assisting integrity managers in their search for internal corrosion damage and corrosion under insulation (CUI). Key takeaways from this webinar include:

  • How ART can be used to detect and evaluate piping corrosion without stripping insulation or taking the line out of service.
  • Pros and cons of ART and how to maximize its value.
  • Case studies showcasing the adaptation of the tool and technique.

About the Speakers

Ian Moreau serves as the Technology Manager for MISTRAS Group’s Automated Radiography Testing (ART) development team. He has served in various roles including Field Inspector, Nuclear Lead Auditor, Quality Manager, and Technology Manager. Ian also holds a certification as a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) from the American Welding Society (AWS), and is certified Level III in five methods from the American Society for Non-Destructive Testing (ASNT). He has spent the past 12 years leading technical teams that develop and deploy autonomous robotic platforms and X-ray imaging systems for the inspection of above-ground piping assets.
