On January 20, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump issued the "Unleashing American Energy" executive order to promote domestic energy production in the United States. The order's primary purpose is to reduce regulatory burdens, expedite energy projects, and strengthen America's position as a global energy leader.
Key policies of the executive order include:
- Encouraging energy exploration and production on federal lands and waters, including the Outer Continental Shelf.
- Promoting the development of non-fuel minerals, including rare earth minerals, to create jobs and strengthen supply chains.
- Ensuring that an abundant supply of reliable energy is readily accessible in every State and territory to protect economic and national security and military preparedness.
- Ensuring that all regulatory requirements related to energy are grounded in clearly applicable law.
- Eliminating electric vehicle (EV) mandates and leveling the regulatory playing field for consumer choice in vehicles.
- Safeguarding the American people's freedom to choose various household goods and appliances, including gas stoves, diswashers, water heaters and lightbulbs.
- Ensuring that the global effects of a rule, regulation, or action shall, whenever evaluated, be reported separately from its domestic costs and benefits, in order to promote sound regulatory decision making and prioritize the interests of the American people.
- Guaranteeing that all executive departments and agencies provide opportunity for public comment and rigorous, peer-reviewed scientific analysis.
- Immediately reviewing of all agency actions that potentially burden the development of domestic energy resources, and within 30 days, implement action plans to either suspend, revise, or rescind all agency actions identified as unduly burdensome.
- Streamlining the permitting process for energy projects, including revoking previous orders related to environmental quality.
- Resuming liquefied natural gas (LNG) export permits and reviewing LNG export applications.
