Hydrogen Sulfide Leak at Deer Park Refinery Kills 2 and Sends 35 Others to Seek Treatment

Two people are dead and 35 others were treated after a hydrogen sulfide (H2S) leak was discovered at PEMEX' Deer Park, Texas refinery on Thursday afternoon. H2S is a colorless, flammable, and extremely toxic gas that occurs naturally in crude petroleum and natural gas, and it's one of the leading causes of workplace gas inhalation deaths in the U.S., according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The cause of the leak is still under investigation.

PEMEX took control of the Deer Park facility in January of 2022 after buying the majority stake of the refinery from Shell.
