Becht HTHA JIP Looks to Extend Industry-Leading Equipment Management

Becht, February 14, 2022

Becht is pleased to announce the official launch of the Becht Joint Industry Project on High Temperature Hydrogen Attack: Comprehensive Life Management of HTHA Susceptible Equipment. We’re excited to bring our multidisciplinary team of materials, inspection, modeling, fitness-for-service, and software experts working with global plant operators and JIP sponsors to take our industry-leading HTHA technology to the next level. We are grateful to our current JIP sponsors and look forward to continuing to grow our sponsor group as we develop, over the next three years, critical data and insights towards a high confidence prediction model to better manage equipment reliability and life.

The Becht HTHA JIP aims to offer a complete life management solution for critical equipment in HTHA service. One of the primary goals of the JIP is to develop the data and model to glean economic value through support for safe deferral versus replacement decisions for critical equipment in HTHA service. Built on the existing validated HTHA model, the JIP starts from a position of strength and JIP sponsors will be able to leverage the benefits of data and science-based life predictions on Day 1 of the JIP through a beta version of a cloud-based software made available to sponsors. A key aspect of the JIP is the framework to improve how HTHA inspections are planned and how the inspection results are interpreted. Indeed, significant enhancements in HTHA risk management will be realized through the direct integration of damage modeling and inspection together, rather than addressing each of these critical elements in isolation. The comprehensive HTHA JIP software is designed to offer compelling value to sponsors offering a state-of-the-art user experience while incorporating key HTHA modeling insights uniquely tailored to industry sponsor equipment and data requirements.

We are grateful for the trust our JIP owner-operator partners have placed in us to help advance industry’s knowledge on HTHA. We look forward to providing more tools and certainty to industry for navigating this critical process safety issue.” – Chuck Becht V, P.E., Becht President.

The JIP model will be designed to provide quantified data support for safe deferral of decision-making for Carbon, C-0.5Mo, and low alloy steel equipment vis a vis replacement, offering critical economic flexibility to owner/operators while offering the best-of-breed insights in the current resource-constrained financial climate.
