Explosion Rocks Lake Charles Petrochemical Complex

KPLC News, January 14, 2020

On Monday at approximately 1:15 p.m. local time, an explosion and fire rocked a low-density polyethylene (LDPE) unit at Sasol's Lake Charles Chemical Project. According to Kim Cusimano, manager of Government & Public Affairs for Sasol’s North American Operations, “the new LDPE unit had not yet achieved beneficial operation (BO) as planned for in December 2019... and the unit was in the final stages of commissioning and startup when the incident occurred."

Thankfully, the fire was quickly extinguished and all employees and contractors were safe and accounted for. The cause of the incident is under further investigation.
