Experts from SwRI and Johns Manville Co-Host Live Webinar -- Corrosion Research: The Critical Results and Findings

Press Release, Johns Manville, May 30, 2017

Johns Manville Industrial Insulation Group and Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) will be cohosting a free live webinar about the latest evolution in corrosion under insulation (CUI) testing. The webinar, Corrosion Research: The Critical Results and Findings, is on June 7, 2017 at 2:00pm ET and will be cohosted by Ames Kulprathipanja, Ph.D., from Johns Manville, and Leo Caseres, Ph.D., from SwRI. These two industry experts will discuss the latest research and results from a cutting-edge 2016 CUI study.

Johns Manville and SwRI jointly tested two different insulating materials, InsulThin™ HT and a silica aerogel blanket, in real-world applications under accelerated corrosion conditions. Co-presenter, Dr. Kulprathipanja, Innovation Leader at JM, facilitated the CUI research for Johns Manville. He explained that a potential customer approached JM with a request to address the relative lack of real-world application CUI testing – which then led to this research effort.

This research is intended to provide designers, specifiers and engineers of industrial insulation systems with important, new information about the influence that insulating materials can have in promoting or inhibiting CUI. “The comparative absence of real-world CUI testing isn’t a new concern within the industry,” Ames said. “So we were excited to have the opportunity to work with SwRI to design test methods that would explore how insulation materials perform in real-world conditions that are designed to accelerate corrosion. We believe that this test has the potential to open the door to future testing opportunities like it.”

SwRI played a critical role in designing and overseeing the tests to ensure that the research was thorough and objective. “Research integrity in these situations is critical,” Ames explained. “That’s why we worked with a third-party research facility to oversee this test and to help offer unbiased guidance and objective direction in the test design and the interpretation of the data,” he said.

The findings of this cutting-edge research, as well as the overall impact of CUI and CUI testing will be highlighted live during the June 7 webinar at 2:00 PM ET. All webinar attendees will receive a Certificate of Completion that may be submitted for Professional Development Hour (PDH) credits.
