Canada Approves Kinder Morgan’s $5.4B Trans Mountain Pipeline

Fuel Fix, December 1, 2016

This week, the Canadian government approved Kinder Morgan’s proposal to build its $5.4 billion, 715 mile Trans Mountain oil sands pipeline. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau signed off on the pipeline, stating he believed the project was safe based on "debates, science, and evidence," while simultaneously rejecting the competing Northern Gateway pipeline project proposed by Calgary-based Enbridge. The pipeline will ship oil sands crude from Edmonton, Alberta to ports in British Columbia.

This is a defining moment for our project and Canada’s energy industry,” said Ian Anderson, president of Kinder Morgan Canada, in a statement. “This decision follows many years of engagement and the presentation of the very best scientific, technical and economic information. We are excited to move forward and get this project built, for the benefit of our customers, communities and all Canadians.” Construction on the project is expected to begin in September 2017, with an expected completion in late 2019.
