Deadly Refinery Blast in Turkmenistan

EurasiaNet, June 29, 2016

A deadly explosion has reportedly occurred at the Turkmenbashi Complex of Oil Refineries (TCOR) in Turkmenistan. Media reporting has been limited in the area since the incident occurred so the details of the accident are unclear. Alternative News of Turkmenistan (ANT) reported that a storage tank exploded at the refinery on June 25, killing seven people and injuring several others. The report also linked the explosion to possible poor maintenance work on the tank ventilation system. TCOR is the flagship refining complex of Turkmenistan and accounts for a quarter of the industrial products manufactured in the country. Turkmenistan is a country located in Central Asia, bordered by Kazakhstan to the northwest, Uzbekistan to the north and east, Afghanistan to the southeast, Iran to the south and southwest, and the Caspian Sea to the west.
