Introduction

In oil and gas operations, equipment availability plays a vital role in running a plant in line with the expectations of top management. For all operators, a system made up of a variety of equipment must be available to carry out continued operations. Because this equipment is interlinked, shutting down one piece of equipment often affects the availability of other equipment. Every hour of equipment availability adds value to operations. Although maintenance planning plays an important role in keeping equipment available, maintenance planners must collaborate with other departments to achieve optimum results.

Maintenance Activities

All of a facility’s required maintenance activities should be listed in a maintenance schedule. When putting the schedule together, all maintenance activities, along with other departments’ recommendations, personnel experiences, equipment history & OEM recommendations should be considered. Moreover, the type(s) of maintenance activities should be clearly defined in the schedule, like corrective maintenance, preventive maintenance, predictive maintenance, overhaul, periodic maintenance, condition monitoring, NDT exam, turnaround maintenance, planned shutdown etc.

Main Department Initiated

Sometimes when maintenance activities are scheduled, the majority of the work is carried out by one department. This department typically initiates the plan; however, other departments will often need to work on the same equipment.
