The large LNG facility is located on DAS Island, offshore of Abu Dhabi, in the Persian Gulf and experiences extremely high humidity year round. These conditions are known to produce a high potential for external corrosion and under insulation corrosion of carbon steel and mild steel alloys. If chlorides are present, which can drift from seawater, and are sometimes present in insulation, there may be a potential for Chloride Stress Corrosion Cracking (Cl SCC) of austenitic stainless steels (SS).
ADGAS are members of the API RBI Software Usergroup. This LNG plant is comprised of 3 process trains and miscellaneous associated plants comprised of approximately 1700 pressure vessels and 9000 piping lines. Trains 1 and 2 were originally built in 1977 and Train 3 was built in 1994. Raw produced feed gas is processed to produce various hydrocarbon products, including LNG. As such, the process contains various constituents including H2S, CO and CO2, which in certain concentrations, forms and under particular conditions can lead to equipment damage in the forms of corrosion, cracking and blistering, and if not managed can lead to unplanned failures.
