Hundreds of risk based inspection analyses have been completed by contractors and owner users world wide, by now. Much is being learned as the various approaches gain acceptance. This editorial is only one perspective built upon the experiences of many.
After either managing directly or being involved in over 30 projects and having the privilege of using API levels I, 2 and 3, and two other private RBI software tools on actual projects in refinery and chemical plants I am convinced that simpler is better. Ultimately the RBI analysis and results should be integrated, to the appropriate degree, into our daily inspection process.
Here are some helpful hints that I have learned from actual work, both in performing RBI studies, and reviewing overall inspection programs where step improvements were desired, and RBI was just one link in the inspection process. Perhaps they will help others on the road to implementation and/or improvement.
