The API Subcommittees on Inspection and Pressure Vessels & Tanks are ever vigilant in keeping up with current trends and state-of-the-art technology for in-service inspection of pressure vessels, process piping, and aboveground storage tanks. One result of this effort is the recognition of risk-based inspection (RBI) methods by the API inspection codes (API 510, 570, and 653) as a valid methodology for developing an inspection strategy.

The petrochemical process industry faces innumerable challenges in maintaining the mechanical integrity of process equipment. Current market conditions demand that companies focus limited resources effectively in order to remain competitive. The API inspection codes have a proven track record in allowing owner-users to employ reasonable, flexible, and most importantly, safe inspection and repair procedures to prevent accidents. RBI is the latest alternative to be added to this list of procedures that help in the establishment of an effective inspection program.
