PERF (Petroleum Environmental Research Forum), a mechanism used successfully for joint industry environmental projects, is being considered for NDE-related research. Many of the same companies using the approach for environmental challenges make up the group processing work in the field of mechanical integrity related NDE. Leaders, made up of owner/user representatives, predominantly from oil and chemical companies, are endeavoring to gauge the interest level of other potential sponsors. The group is soliciting interest from interested parties for JIP's (joint industry projects). Initial meeting attendees, representing eight operating companies, agree, "...advanced NDE development would benefit from an industry pooling of resources." Five additional companies expressed interest but were unable to attend the initial meeting.
The group identified technical topics with wide across-the-board appeal and need. The API (American Petroleum Institute) Task Group on Joint Industry Sponsored R&D for Inspection Technology's list was used as a starting point. Representatives from the thirteen companies referenced above concurred on the following areas, in descending order of priority:
