Research Scientist/Engineer Corrosion / Material Integrity

The Environment and Corrosion team is located at the NOVA Chemicals Centre for Applied Research in Calgary where we conduct applied research to support our business in petrochemicals and polyolefins manufacturing as well as TransCanada Pipeline Ltd assets. As a member of this team, you will provide research support in areas related to corrosion and corrosion mitigation and managing the reliability R&D portfolio. This is a challenging position that will provide the successful candidate and opportunity to execute reliability R&D projects in an industrial setting.

Responsibilities: 

This position requires a strong knowledge in the fields of corrosion, corrosion mitigation methods, electrochemistry, material performance, and metallurgy. Strong analytical, experimental, simulation and project management skills are also required for this position.  

Typical tasks may include but are not limited to:

  • Portfolio management for the R&D reliability projects;
  • Development of solution techniques;
  • Applying ASTM, NACE, ISO and other testing standards;
  • Design and construction of experiments and test rigs to solve specific problems/opportunities;
  • Ensure accuracy of results, identify unusual trends, recommend and take agreed upon corrective actions;
  • Suggest improvements to numerical approach, equipment, procedures and processes;
  • Prepare internal technical reports and external papers for conferences and journal publications.

Qualifications: 

  • PhD (in chemical or metallurgical engineering or chemistry or material science) with 3+ years of related experience or a MSc. with 6+ years of related practical experience;
  • Proven working experience as a technical portfolio/program/project manager;
  • Excellent understanding of corrosion failure mechanisms, corrosion mitigation methods, corrosion monitoring and electrochemical measurements.  CANDIDATES WHO ARE SELECTED FOR AN INTERVIEW WILL BE TESTED ON THEIR FUNDAMENTAL UNDERSTANDING;
  • Experience with failure analysis and root cause data-gathering;
  • Experience to initiate, lead and supervise R&D projects and/or programs;
  • Preference will be given to candidates demonstrating excellent academic records and achievements.
