Overview
The oil and natural gas industry is undergoing a transformative shift due to advancements in automation, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and data analytics. These technologies are redefining operations, creating a pressing need for new skills and qualifications across all levels—from field inspectors to executives. In response, the American Petroleum Institute (API) launched the NextGen Credentialing Initiative under its Individual Certification Programs (ICP). This initiative seeks to align professional credentials with emerging technological demands, enabling workforce upskilling and ensuring adaptability to industry changes.
To identify key areas for workforce development, ICP surveyed over 1,100 industry professionals. The survey revealed that while optimism exists regarding technological advancements, significant gaps persist in training for tools like AI-driven inspections, remote monitoring, and advanced non-destructive testing. Additionally, it highlighted roles such as data acquisition specialists, integration engineers, and drone operators as critical for credentialing, with a high demand for competency proof.
