RBI is heavily dependent upon knowledgeable people applying and stewarding the technology. Risk Based Inspection analysts need to be intimately familiar with the software, that is; they need to know why it calculates what it calculates, down to the finest details. “Black boxes” are not acceptable!

Those same people need to be very familiar with process plant equipment and to an extent with processes, i.e. what is realistic, what isn’t and the ability to question damage mechanisms, damage propensity and corrosion rates. This can be done with some understanding of the stability and complexity of the process and an appreciation of the “real world” (comes with experience).
